New chair of Malay studies PUTRAJAYA: A new chair of Malay Studies will be set up in Hankuk University, South Korea, in addition to the existing ones in the Netherlands , Ohio, United States, Wellington, New Zealand , Beijing Foreign Studies University and Xiamen, China. Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh said the decision, which has been approved by the cabinet on Wednesday, is meant to enhance internationalisation activities through exchange of students and lecturers. "The cost of the chair will be born by both the government and private sector of Malaysia and Korea. The first chairholder will sit there for five years first but his tenure could be extended later after negotiations," he said at the ministry yesterday. Earlier, he presented the certificate of appointment to Prof Datuk Mohamed Abu Bakar who has been selected as the 13th chairholder of Tun Abdul Razak Chair at Ohio University, Athens, United States. Present was US ambassador Christopher J. LaFleur.
